Gem of the Day: King Richard

Earlier this year, I watched the King Richard movie starring Will Smith, which is based on the story of Venus and Serena Williams' rise to tennis stardom, with the help of their father. If you haven't seen the movie, definitely watch it. I was sooooo inspired by it y'all. I had so many takeaways from the movie, and here are a few of them (they won't spoil the whole movie, I promise):

  • Have a plan! But even more than having a plan, stick to it, even when others may not understand. Everything that Venus, Serena and their parents worked for happened because of hard work, faith, determination and consistency. Even when people thought they were crazy or told them no, they didn't give up.

  • You don't have to be born with ‘it’, but you do have to work for ‘it’. Whatever your ‘it’ is, believe you can achieve it, work for it, and things will fall into place for you eventually.

  • Remain both confident and humble. Both can co-exist.

  • You don't have to do what everyone else is doing. You don't have to do things the way they've always been done either. Venus and Serena mastered their unique open stance when other tennis players weren't doing that, and when coaches didn't encourage it. The lesson - do you!

  • In addition to having a plan and sticking to it, know when to pivot. Don't be inflexible out of fear or to the point that it limits your progress.

  • Know your worth!

  • Failure fuels victories and provides valuable lessons.

  • Don't say yes if it doesn't feel right or out of desperation. Sometimes saying no leads to something else way better down the road. By Venus saying no to $3 million, it later led to $12 million.

I love movies like this that are more than just entertaining and cause you to think and be motivated. Again, you have to check it out if you haven't. And while you're at it, grab Will Smith's memoir, Will. It was my book for February, and I absolutely love it!. You can grab the book on sale below.

Which lesson from King Richard resonated with you the most? Let me know in the comments.

Have a glowing day!
