4 Things My Trip to Curacao Reaffirmed

I went to Curacao 2 months ago, and it was absolutely amazing! I was afforded the opportunity to travel to this beautiful country with Significant Impact and served as the panel moderator for their Women’s Wellness Weekend. A time was had time, and I was just reminded of this as I saw some of the same women I traveled with this past weekend at The Momference.

Aside from the joy of fun in the sun, my trip reaffirmed 4 important things:

Everything we need is within, within reach or on the way

I left that weekend with my cup full. There was only 1 hiccup that tried to derail my amazing weekend…my luggage didn't arrive when I landed in Curacao. I had a bone to pick with American Airlines over my delayed flight, which resulted in me having to sprint and barely making my connection, which then resulted in my suitcase not arriving. While I was blown initially, I kept a positive attitude (along with the ladies traveling with me), and I believe God honored that. When we arrived to our resort with only the few items we carried on and on our backs, we stepped off the shuttle with smiles on our faces, grateful that we were able to be in another country, surrounded by amazing women, with the intention of focusing on our well-being. Then, something beautiful happened after our arrival…

We checked into our rooms, enjoyed dinner with the host and other attendees, and then some of us got together to strategize. You see the panel was the next day, and it was half of the panel who didn't have luggage. Well, then the beauty happened. One of the panelists wore the same size as 2 of us, so she gave us bottoms to wear for the panel. The host had shirts for all attendees anyway, so boom, we now had a complete outfit. Before I left home, something told me to carry a book bag and put a few essential items in it. I rarely do this. I typically only carry my laptop and purse and check my luggage with everything else. It turns out that book bag saved me and one of the other panelists. In the book bag, I had a few sets of clean and brand new underclothes with the tags (that I was then able to share a set with a panelist who wore the same size as me). I had 2 sets of clothes, makeup, deodorant, my phone charger and some other essentials as well. Plus, our swag bag had some facial products, and the resort had toothpaste and toothbrushes and soap for us, too. Now, I literally had everything I needed to get through the next day.

So the next day was the panel, and it was amazing! You couldn't even tell that we lost our luggage (because black women don't look like what we're going through). After the panel, we got good news that our luggage was arriving in Curacao, so we headed back to the airport and sure enough it was there! We finished the rest of the trip looking good, feeling good, and having the best time. So 1 lesson that was reaffirmed through our experience was – everything we need is within, within reach or on the way (which is a quote one of my good friends loves). Everything I needed was in my carry on bag, within reach from borrowing items from a friend and on the way when that luggage arrived 1 day later. Life is always teaching us lessons and reaffirming things, so when something goes wrong, try not to trip. Things are working out for us!

Our voices matters

I truly enjoyed not only moderating the panel, but hearing all the nuggets each panelist had to offer. There were so many different perspectives and stories amongst those of us who spoke, but the common thread was each of us had something of value to share. It reaffirmed that our individual voices matter.

WE deserve to take breaks

This trip was the start of back to back weekend travel for me. At a point, I began to feel guilty about having to leave the kids and get help. However, I recognized that I not only need breaks, I deserve them! When we pour into ourselves, it benefits us and those connected to us.

Being in the company of other dope women is superior

It was beautiful to bond with many of the women who traveled to Curacao. We laughed out loud, enjoyed delicious meals together, explored a new place, felt the sand in between our toes and sun our skin, had time to breathe and relax and poured into ourselves! It was exactly what I needed, and being in the company of other dope women was a 10/10, highly recommend!
