Goal Planning

One of the things glow getters have in common is our commitment to achieving our goals. In order to achieve our goals though, we have to plan. As the saying goes, when we fail to plan, we plan to fail. This is why really thinking through our goals and outlining the steps to achieve them is so key for success. As quarter one is soon coming to an end, I wanted to share how I’ve been goal planning thus far this year and how I plan to take it up a notch as we welcome quarter 2.

CREATE YOUR GOALS

In January, I blocked off a weekend to brainstorm and identify my goals for 2021. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to create a list of the personal and professional goals you want to achieve this year. Be prayerful about the goals you choose. If you’ve already created this list, it’s time for you to review it again and make sure what you’ve listed is still applicable. In creating my list, I noted what I realistically would set out to accomplish as well as some big goals that would stretch and grow me because we all know greatness lies outside of our comfort zone.

Next, I outlined my overarching vision by creating a vision board. The awesome ladies of the Swirl & Sip Podcast hosted a virtual vision board party that helped me to get this done. Since creating my vision board, I look at it daily to keep my goals top of mind, and I also visualize while doing it. Adding the visualization component has been game changing in just a few months. In the words of Eunique Jones Gibson, “if you can see it in your head, you can see it in your hand”!

IMPLEMENT PLANNING + SYSTEMS

Once you have your goals, then comes the planning. If your goal is to plan a wedding, some of those steps you have to implement are setting a date, hiring a planner, picking a venue and the list goes on. I took a separate weekend to actually break my goals down for the Shalyce Tyson lifestyle brand into quarterly goals and then monthly action steps. This is similar to the roadmaps that Rachel Hollis refers to in one of my favorite books. It’s one thing for me to say I have a goal to be a speaker on panels and podcasts, but it’s way more intentional and deliberate to note steps I will take to get there, such as: host more IG lives to share valuable content which also gives me practice to improve my public speaking; listen to more podcasts, interviews and TED Talks to study how I can master public speaking; send pitch letters to be a guest on podcasts and moderator/panelist for events; accept more of the speaking invitations that hit my inbox; and more.

I put my quarterly goals and monthly action items into my planner and project management system, and I have notifications and deadlines enabled. This has been a great way to stay focused on all the steps I need to take, when I need to take them, and to track my progress overall. As we move into quarter 2, I plan to be even more focused on using this tool. Whether it’s as simple as jotting down your steps in a journal, using a google doc (which I love) or using a software system, determine a system that will work for you to keep your action items top of mind.

COMMIT TO WEEKLY/MONTHLY EXECUTION

Last but not least, you’ve got to do the work. No amount of planning eliminates the need to actually do the work. And don’t worry, I’m preaching to myself while I’m preaching to you. While I believe in rest and breaks, I also believe in committing to achieving my goals. With this in mind, I make time daily to focus on my mission, and I make sure I get to chill, too. Each day, I try to stick to at least 3 realistic things I can accomplish that day or do to move the needle in achieving my goals. This is so important because when to do lists are too long, it makes me anxious and overwhelmed. Again, I have my project management system that outlines my to do’s with deadlines and I have buffer room. This helps me stay on task, while knowing I have room to make adjustments as needed.

In addition to holding myself accountable, I also have an amazing accountability partner who holds me accountable, too. We meet bi-weekly and having her in my corner has been game changing, and vice versa. We are not meant to do everything alone, so having someone I can share with, who can cheer me on and provide awesome feedback is a breath of fresh air. Later on this year, I’ll share a full post about accountability partners, but in the meantime, I would encourage you to consider having trusted one, especially if you are an entrepreneur. If you need one, sign up for my newsletter and shoot me an email, as this may be something other glow getters are in need of and I can try to connect folks.

I hope these tips helps you to grow and glow, and of course achieve your goals! Let me know in the comments how quarter 1 has been. While I haven’t achieved all of my Q1 goals, I am super proud of what I have accomplished and especially the goals I exceeded. Speaking of being proud, be sure to join me next Friday, March 26th at 7pm EST on Instagram Live for Fourth Friday’s with Friends. It will be a Women’s History Month celebration, so I’m creating a space for us to share our wins. You don’t want to miss it!

Have a glowing day!

Xo,

Shalyce
